The Deep Roots of Youth Anger in Western Societies

Why does adulthood feel increasingly difficult to reach? In Has the West Betrayed Its Youth?, Dr. Driss Effina investigates the economic, social and political pressures shaping young people’s expectations across Western societies.

The book examines how housing costs, insecure work, delayed independence, unequal access to wealth, social comparison and political representation interact. It tests the idea of a common wave of anger rather than assuming that every country and every generation shares the same experience.

Combining original data analysis with economic models and comparative country profiles, the study distinguishes material pressures from directly measured political emotions. Its comparative framework covers 22 Western countries, while direct survey evidence on political emotions is drawn from the United States. Conditional scenarios explore possible futures without presenting uncertainty as certainty.
